About Air Jordan 7 (VII)
The Air Jordan 7 was worn by Mike in the 1991-92 season as well as the gold-medal winning Barcelona Olympic Games. While wearing the Air Jordan 7′s, Michael Jordan won his third MVP award, second NBA championship, and the NBA scoring title. On top of that, Jordan took home his second Olympic Gold Medal when the Dream Team of ’92 crushed the international competition including a 116-48 rout over Angola. The Air Jordan 7 is a very unique shoe in the Jordan line as well as a basketball shoe. The Air Jordan 7 featured Huarache technology which made the shoe really stick to your foot. The shoe was much lighter weight than some of the previous Air Jordans as well. The Air Jordan 7 was also unique in that it did not feature the “Nike Air” logo, a visible air unit, or clear soles. Once again, designed by Tinker Hatfield, the shoe had something new. A neoprene sockliner was the first of its kind. The Air Jordan 7 was promoted in a marketing campaign in which Michael Jordan appeared with Bugs Bunny. The Air Jordan 7′s then inherited the nickname “the Buggs”.The Divide of Jordan FollowersThe Air Jordan 7 was a love/hate shoe. Many collectors thought it was the greatest shoe ever, while many thought it was the worst shoe imaginable. None-the-less, it is still a very popular shoe and has a large following whenever re-released.Retro newsThe first retro release happened in December, 2002 but Nike is set to bring the Air Jordan 7 back again. In 2004, Nike re-released the Olympic colorway to celebrate the 2004 Athens Games. In 2006, Nike is set to bring back the White/Black-Cardinal Jordan 7′s as well as a handful of Retro+’s.
Tinker Hatfield could be inspired by anything when it comes to the Air Jordan line. On the Air Jordan 7 when Tinker was in Portland, he saw a poster that was African art, influenced by an Afropop Worldwide. The person in the poster was playing a guitar shaped like Africa. Around the time when Tinker was ready to design the Air Jordan VII Michael sat down with him and mentioned that he wanted the shoe to “stay young and interesting, while remaining sophisticated” Tinker had now went inside the store and asked to purchase the poster, but the owner did not want to sell it because he was advertising a radio show and the Afropop music. Tinker had now told him he worked on the design of the Air Jordan line. The store owner decided to sell the poster to him for $15. All the lines on the Air Jordan 7 were influenced by Western African tribal patterns, which were on the poster. The Air Jordan VII was also worn by Michael Jordan in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Nike had made a special “Olympic” color way, and instead of the number “23″ there was 9 on the back. In 1992 Nike had released five color ways of the Air Jordan 7. They sold for $125.00 each. In 2002 two more models came out retailing at $125.00. In 2004 the Olympic VIIs came out and sold for $130.00. Now in 2006 four models released which sold for $135.00, and one women’s model sold for $130.00.
